Don't store engine parts in newspaper
unless you want them to rust
Newspaper absorbs moisture and rusts steel engine parts wrapped in it. Back in the engine shop days we would receive engine parts that were packaged in newspaper. If the parts were wrapped for a few days to protect them in shipping, no problem. But, if the parts had been stored wrapped in newspaper, often they had rusted.
If it was a foggy day you could feel the moisture in the newspaper. There are probably some chemicals in the newspaper that might also contribute to rusting.
In the shop we used to spray WD40 on engine parts after machining to prevent corrosion. For long-term storage, a VCI corrosion inhibitor is suggested. See www.rust-shield for an example of how these products work.
